My section is going to go on mandatory overtime for 6 weeks. We will have to work 10 hours a day Mondays to Thursdays, and 8 hours on every other Saturdays. I don’t agree with this, but can’t argue with the boss.
My section consists of engineers and designers (drafters). The designers are the ones who are really swamp and should be working overtime. The engineers are not that busy.
My project hasn’t even started. I asked my senior engineer what project I am supposed to put my hours to. I said I could charge my overtime hours to “Overhead” (which is what we usually charge to when we don’t have any project work.)
He said the boss wanted us to keep up with all the standards. I agree that we should be aware of the design standards, but should not have to come to the office on Saturdays to read them.
I told the boss that I couldn’t work on Saturdays, because I have some other activity to do. He thought it was about the IT class I was taking. I told him I quit that long time ago (I think I told him a dozen times already, he didn’t seem to remember), but I had other thing going on. That other thing is Kumon.
Kay+ told me last week that she decided to close the center. It was quite a relief to me. But this is not going to happen immediately. It could go on for at least a couple months, so I thought it’s better to tell the boss that I could not work Saturdays. He said it was OK (I always get some privileges from him, I don’t have to do what I don’t want to do, providing that I am in a reasonable limit.)
He told me he wouldn’t mind if I would want to work more than 10 hours during weekdays, I nodded, but thinking “no way.” I did not agree to work overtime in the first place, so why I would want to work more hours, especially when I had some excuse.
However, I think about it more later, I should try to work as many hours as others (like 55 hours or so a week). At least it is to show my contribution to the team, in return to the privileges that I always get over most people in the team. I think the next commitment I should make is that I should concentrate more on work and make as many billable hours as I could. This means less playing around on the internet. More attention to the work, even though it is boring like hell. -_-“
