OK, the long awaited envelope has arrived finally... the letter concerning the special raise and promotion. I have been telling myself not to have a high hope since the news was out. That was just my self-preservation, if I aim low (no raise), I would be happy with any outcome. I also considered other unpleasant scenarios, such as getting promoted, and get too little raise, etc.
Why promotion is bad? Because it comes with more responsibilities and higher expectation. I had told my big boss when he promoted me two years ago, that if he didn't want me to just quit (without a real good cause), don't try to promote me too soon. I wouldn't want that, so don't think that he was doing me a favor.
However, these past few months, I had a hunch that my promotion is just around the corner. A couple months back, the electrical guy who is about my experienced just got promoted, and moved from the cubicle to an office. A few younger people in my department also got promoted to my level. They are breathing down my neck, also pushing for me to move up. I have been in this level for two years, my salary is high enough that if I got a raise, it is pushing to the next level. With all of these, I still hope that they will wait until next April to promote me. But I wasn't that lucky!
Yes, I got promoted. The raise is reasonably large, comparing with the last time I got for promotion+normal raise. It must have been because of my complaint last time. The big boss asked if I was OK with the raise and promotion. I told him that I didn't care about promotion, but while I was promoted, it should be fair. The money I got then wasn't worth it, considering how much expectation will come with a higher level. He didn't do anything (said he couldn't!) I guessed he tried to fix it this time (or he's probably tired of hearing my complaints.) It's funny he failed to read me, because whatever the raise was, I wouldn't say a word. I am already beyond that point, I just don't give a darn thing about it.
Anyway, I just found out something new. One of my guys (P) didn't get this special raise, and I thought he might not be happy, so I went to talk to the guy who is higher than me. He told me that P already got his raise in August, because in July he said he wanted to quit. So I recalled that P went to interview with one company upcountry, and almost decided to leave. I thought he changed his mind because he would rather stay in Bangkok, now I knew the real reason. I am happy for him, that at least he got what he asked for. However, it makes me a bit upset again, realising that if someone wants anything from this company, he will have yell and scream for it. And if someone is quiet, he is not going to get anything.
I don't think it's right, but that's probably the way the world is these days.
